Web Miscellany: Compilation #41

Happy Friday! What are you up to this weekend? I’ve planning to attend a showing of The Dark Crystal (which I’ve never seen before) and make kimchi with ingredients from the farmer’s market. Hope you have a good one! Here are a few interesting links from around the web:

  1. “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.”  Johnny Cash
  2. On his birthday, Zen Habits blogger Leo Babauta’s (mostly adult) kids wrote out a list of lessons he’d taught each of them in their lives so far. Here are the eleven most popular answers among his six kids.
  3. “Children are able to see through our bullshit, but if we don’t respect them and listen to them, we learn nothing from them, and nothing changes.” Perhaps The Emperor’s New Clothes is just as relevant today as when written two centuries ago.
  4. The dimensions of things. This is so satisfying.
  5. Garden Lover’s Club. This is a great resource, with growing guides for specific plants and a plant finder feature that groups plants together in a really helpful way, such as by color.
  6. The Ethical Dilemma of Teaching Kids How the Sausage Gets Made. Really interesting thoughts on equality, sustainability and parenting. Did you know you’d save more water skipping one family chicken dinner than by skipping six months of showers?
  7. “Kahneman contends that happiness and satisfaction are distinct. Happiness is a momentary experience that arises spontaneously and is fleeting. Meanwhile, satisfaction is a long-term feeling, built over time and based on achieving goals and building the kind of life you admire.” We we really long for is contentment.
  8.  This made me smile.

  1. There was a place near where I grew up that did a variation of the sign you have here. It read “Upset? Have regret? Eat spaget.”
