Web Miscellany: Compilation #38

What are you up to this weekend? I have absolutely nothing planned, and I’m looking forward to every minute of it. Here are a few fun links from around the web:

  1. “I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it.” – Dave Grohl
  2. All six tracks from Moby’s “Long Ambients 2” are free to download, here. It’s good stuff!
  3. If you ever get bored and want some quick and easy entertainment, just Google “I’m feeling curious.” Google will supply you with endless fun facts!
  4. On an individual and small collective basis, the IndieWeb already works. But does an IndieWeb approach scale to the general public? If it doesn’t scale yet, can we, who envision and design and build, create a new generation of tools that will help give birth to a flourishing, independent web?
  5. Ethical.net has compiled a list of resources for “discovering ethical alternatives to stuff,” including all kinds of services and apps that tend to be open source, privacy friendly, not supported by advertising, and decentralized.
  6. Along the same thread, some thoughts from the archives: Privacy Fatigue & Ditching Facebook.
  7. Why Are Autoimmune Diseases on the Rise? Likely, it’s the product of our own success as an industrialized species. The bodies of those afflicted simply can’t keep up with the demands of modern living.
  8. How We Can Save the Honeybees. “A professional beekeeper shares some ideas for preventing the insect apocalypse.” In related news, mycologist Paul Stamets has developed a immune-boosting fungal food to save the bees. (I can’t wait for the product to become available!)
  9. Is Prison Necessary? Ruth Wilson Gilmore Might Change Your Mind. “In three decades of advocating for prison abolition, the activist and scholar has helped transform how people think about criminal justice.” The privatized prison system is broken and rehabilitation works.
  10. I totally feel this. Same goes for blog posts. 😉

  1. Thank you for leading off with some Dave Grohl wisdom. He’s one of my all-time favorite human beings, living or dead. My weekend will be busy as always. I have to get up early to take The Girl to a half-da7 volleyball clinic then spend the rest of the weekend doing house- and yard work & helping family. Enjoy your peace!

    1. Agreed. Leading with Dave is worth several dozen brownie points… or gold stars, or whatever metric you’re using for spurious award points. Yay! Some great stuff here.
