Web Miscellany: Compilation #8

Hello fellow bloggers! What fun things do you have planned for this Father’s Day weekend?

I subscribe to a weekly CSA box through a local farm and am looking forward to some fresh delicata squash and strawberries. Yum! I’m also planning to celebrate Father’s Day with my family.

Feel free to share your favorite findings from the week in the comments!

  1. Have the hiccups? Chug one ounce of apple cider vinegar and they’ll instantly disappear. Thanks to my father-in-law’s grandmother for passing down the helpful tip.
  2. Quote I’m thinking about: “We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same” ― Carlos Castaneda
  3. I’m a huge fan of Malcolm Gladwell including his podcast, Revisionist History. The latest episode, Free Brian Williams, explores the fallibility of memory and asks why we insist that lapses of memory must also be lapses of character.
  4. On my to-read list: How to Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics by Michael Pollan. Promising research is pointing towards psilocybin as a natural treatment for depression, anxiety and existential fear, without adverse effects of traditional pharmaceticals.
  5. An interesting and thought provoking Twitter thread on wealth and money by Michael Karnjanaprakorn. “Success is not how much time you spend doing what you love, but how little time you spend doing what you hate.”
  6. Speaking of money, more than half of Millennials expect to be millionaires someday, though 20% still depend on their parents and they don’t plan to start investing until age 36. Reality check: I’ve been investing 15-20% of my income since 22 and, by conservative estimates, will have $250k invested by the time my peers make their first deposit. At my current rate, I’ll reach $1 million in 2045. Those who invest from age 36 to 56 will need to invest $2,200 per month during those 20 years to reach $1 million.
  7. Mr. Rogers had a simple set of rules for talking to children, guided by extensive academic research.
  8. Amazing geometric weathering on a chain link fence.
  9. This short story fictionalizes the implications of universal basic income and singularity. This is part of a series by Calum Chace, meant to offer little glimpses of what may lie ahead in the century of two singularities (technological and economic).
  10. I made this Baked Eggplant Parmesan with some white eggplants from the local farm. It was fantastic!
  11. Have you heard of Amazon Smile? Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to the charity of your choice. Over the last several years, my everyday purchases have contributed funding to the SENS Research Foundation, which funds research into age-related diseases.
  12. Every wondered how a spray bottle works? It’s surprisingly interesting.
  13. One of my favorite TEDtalks: The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer.

      1. I hVent signed up yet this year because we are about to go on a trip for a few weeks… but I saw my brother’s box he got this week… and I was envious! It’s a great way to support local agriculture! ❤️❤️❤️

      2. Yes, absolutely!! You can’t go wrong supporting local farms, eating fresh & organic veggies, and discovering new foods. Prior to my box, I’d never tried kohlrabi, fennel, Asian melon, purple snap peas, and more… it’s always a fun surprise. I would highly recommend giving it a shot–if you do, ENJOY!! ❤

  1. The only downside to the anti-hiccup remedy you suggested is that you have to drink vinegar. Even being apple cider vinegar, it’s not a pleasant taste by itself.

    1. Yes, that is absolutely true. It was not the most pleasant of experiences, but… after over an hours of hiccups, I think this time it was worth it haha.
